Your files, encrypted end to end

AeroVault encrypts file containers locally. The credential store, AeroVault containers, password-protected archives and the AeroCrypt provider overlay are separate formats and workflows. Choose the appropriate format and keep a recoverable backup of your passphrase.

Documented Encryption Formats

Container formats have different documented layouts:

  • AeroVault v2 uses AES-256-GCM-SIV, Argon2id and authenticated headers.
  • AeroVault v3 adds chunking and compression.
  • AeroVault v4 builds on v3 with an error-correction layer.

Filename, archive and credential formats are separate; consult the format documentation.

Encrypt any cloud, transparently

AeroCrypt is a separate provider-layer overlay. Bind an encrypted store to a saved profile so supported GUI, CLI, MCP and sync operations use encrypted names and content. Access to an existing Cryptomator vault is a separate vault workflow. Inspect the chosen format and binding before transferring.

Backups that heal themselves

Optional Reed-Solomon recovery data can protect against bounded corruption. AeroVault container recovery and detached .aerocorrect sidecars have different layouts. Repair verifies the reconstructed data and refuses incomplete recovery; parity does not replace independent backups or protect against every loss scenario.

Open format, no lock-in

The open-source AeroVault crate and published format documents describe container compatibility. ZIP, 7z, .aerozip, Cryptomator and rclone crypt are separate formats with their own access paths. Check which operations and versions are supported before moving an existing encrypted collection.
